Printable practice protocol

A classroom profile-to-practice cycle

Use the Triad as a vocabulary for observation and learner agency while keeping assessment, accessibility, and cultural context visible.

Time

One 50–60 minute session plus a later check-in

Outcome

A learner-selected hypothesis, one differentiated activity, and an observation record that does not become a grade.

Before you begin

Materials

  • The profile or a fictional example
  • A shared musical task
  • Three observation columns: T / P / E
  • An accessible alternative for every audio task
  1. 01

    Teach the distinction

    0–10 min

Separate relative profile, developmental magnitude, achievement, and artistic value. Explain that the public instrument is unvalidated.

    • A percentage is a share of this profile, not a percentile.
    • Magnitude is descriptive, not a grade.
    • Training and opportunity can change the pattern.
  2. 02

    Observe before labeling

    10–20 min

Use one musical task and record behaviors, not trait claims.

    • Tonal: notices, anticipates, organizes.
    • Performative: coordinates, repeats, recovers.
    • Expressive: shapes, differentiates, communicates.
  3. 03

    Let the learner choose

    20–30 min

Offer one activity in each domain. The learner chooses which current strength to mobilize and which adjacent demand to explore.

    • What do you want to make clearer?
    • Which support would help?
    • How will you know whether it changed?
  4. 04

    Differentiate one task

    30–45 min

Keep the musical goal common while varying access and route: visual mapping, modeled action, listening comparison, verbal description, or physical cueing.

    • Do not require audio discrimination when playback or hearing access is limited.
    • Do not equate notation literacy with tonal aptitude.
    • Use repertoire the learner can meaningfully interpret.
  5. 05

    Reflect and revisit

    45–60 min + later

Compare learner reflection, teacher observation, and the musical artifact. Revisit after another context rather than turning one session into a stable classification.

    • What transferred?
    • What depended on familiarity?
    • What should be changed in the next task?

Working record

Capture only what helps the next decision.

  1. 1Observed behavior, not inferred trait
  2. 2Access or support used
  3. 3Learner’s own interpretation
  4. 4Musical artifact or evidence
  5. 5Question to revisit
