Boundary rules for the three domains

When does a musical behavior count as tonal, performative, or expressive?

Current position

OMAT assigns a behavior by its primary function in the musical act: organizing intelligible structure, realizing an action reliably, or shaping communicative meaning. The same event can involve all three; the rule prevents the domains from becoming exclusive personality types.

Practical implications

  • Classify the function being examined, not the instrument or job title.
  • Treat overlap as expected and make cross-loading an empirical question.
  • Do not infer a permanent role from a relative profile share.

What magnitude can—and cannot—mean

Why add developmental magnitude without making it a fourth domain?

Current position

The triangle describes relative distribution; magnitude asks about accumulated continuity, intensity, application, and transfer. Keeping them separate prevents a balanced profile from being mistaken for either novice or expert and prevents experience from shifting the point toward one domain.

Practical implications

  • Point position and point size answer different questions.
  • The current 0–100 index is descriptive and unnormed.
  • Longitudinal evidence is required before interpreting change or developmental sensitivity.

Use profiles to design a rehearsal—not a lineup

What practical value remains when compatibility claims are ruled out?

Current position

A group map can distribute attention across structure, execution, and communication, identify decisions that need explicit ownership, and support controlled rehearsal comparisons. It cannot determine whether people belong together or whether one musician is more valuable.

Practical implications

  • Choose a project intention before reading the group pattern.
  • Test one variable on one passage and compare recordings.
  • Assign actions provisionally; never turn a leading share into permanent ownership.

A validation roadmap for the Triad

What evidence would justify stronger interpretation?

Current position

Transparent scoring is necessary but not sufficient. The proposed domains require content review, response-process evidence, reliable measurement, behavioral convergence and distinction, competing-model comparisons, invariance, and longitudinal work.

Practical implications

  • Test three-factor, higher-order, bifactor, and plausible alternative structures.
  • Compare self-report with multiple behavioral and expert-rated indicators.
  • Publish null results, deviations, and limits—not only favorable coefficients.

Culture and repertoire are part of measurement

Can one item bank represent musical organization everywhere?

Current position

Listeners learn culturally situated pitch, rhythm, form, timbre, performance, and expressive conventions. A construct may be broadly useful while particular wording, examples, and audio contrasts remain repertoire-bound. Adaptation therefore requires collaboration, not translation alone.

Practical implications

  • Document the musical assumptions inside every stimulus.
  • Use local expertise and cognitive interviewing before group comparison.
  • Test invariance and allow the framework itself to change when evidence requires it.

How OMAT differs from earlier assessment traditions

Is the Triad a replacement for Gold-MSI, PROMS, MET, Gordon, or Seashore?

Current position

No. Earlier batteries and contemporary instruments address different constructs, formats, and use cases—from sensory discrimination and aptitude profiles to musical sophistication and objective perception skills. They provide comparators and methodological precedents; OMAT still has to show whether its proposed organization adds explanatory or practical value.

Practical implications

  • Compare constructs and evidence, not only item counts or labels.
  • Do not borrow the validation status of an established instrument.
  • Predefine what incremental value would count as support—and what result would count against the model.
